An ordinary story about ordinary people
Andra Teede: Every once in a while you run into a person in a wheelchair and it just confuses you. Should I look away or do I look at them? Should I help them or pretend like I didn’t even notice that they are in a wheelchair? Should I ask whether they need help? What if I mess it up and it comes out offensive somehow? When talking to them, should I look into the sky, their eyes or can I also look at the wheels, their legs, which may or may not be there, working differently than other peoples’ legs? These and so many other questions have crossed my mind because I’m not too used to handicapable people, at least I wasn’t before.
This is why I wanted to write a documentary theatre production, to understand them. And for everyone else, to get rid of the awkwardness of bumping into someone in a wheelchair or someone with different arms and legs to you.
