An interactive story of children and their parents
It is not completely clear which genetic traits are behind autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) but clearly the numbers of diagnoses are skyrocketing. There are many reasons – from increased quality of medical attention to increased age of childbirth (the father’s age has been found to play a role in the development of ASDs). We wish all researchers and neurologists luck in finding out the root causes but the fact remains that our children are surrounded by peers, who have trouble understanding others’ emotions as well as their own. The characters in “Short” invite the audience to participate, to make sense of the children and the parents we might otherwise simply shoot an annoyed glance at when their socially “unconventional” child throws a tantrum at the local mall.
Noa Lazar-Keinan’s work has a sort of magnetic pull when it comes to portraying the big moments in a person’s life, bringing out the comic in the tragic and the importance in the miniscule. She does it with an ease of sympathy and warmth, creating something truly therapeutic in the process.
The author draws on their own personal experience – a story of parents whose child is diagnosed as being on the spectrum, leaving them adrift in situations where their differences and attitudes come bubbling to the top, in their attempt and failure to accept that their child is not “normal”.
